Moving Forward headlines this year’s annual meeting of the Iowa Association of Electric Cooperatives, Dec. 1-2, 2011. Nearly 500 electric co-op representatives will meet in Des Moines to get the latest information on industry trends, perspectives on the state’s and nation’s economy and opportunities that come with increased global competition. Attendees include locally elected directors, managers and key staff from 42 electric cooperatives that, as a whole, provide electricity to approximately 650,000 Iowans in 210,000 homes, farms and businesses in each of Iowa’s 99 counties. |

Governor Branstad signed into law HF 267, a bill that requires the State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO) to adhere to, and not exceed, what is required under the National Historic Preservation Act with respect to surveys RECs are asked to conduct and, more generally, the level of effort required of electric cooperatives to identify historic properties. Additionally, this bill provides that the recommendations and decisions of the SHPO are subject to the review and approval of the director of the Department of Cultural Affairs.

At a time when other businesses in Iowa were retrenching and reducing their payrolls, the state’s electric cooperatives were showing significant signs of growth in both investment and income during 2009, according to the latest Economic Impact Study released today by the Iowa Association of Electric Cooperatives.
