Safety
In tandem with the National Electrical Code, the National Electrical Safety Code provides standards for the installation, operation and maintenance of conductors and equipment in electric supply stations, overhead and underground electric supply and communications lines. Iowa's electric cooperatives continuously stay abreast of any revisions to these codes and in training new staff.Communicating in Times of Need
Iowa's electric cooperatives maintain their own radio network. The cooperatives monitor federal and state regulations regarding use of the radios. The Iowa Association of Electric Cooperative's staff also coordinates new frequency applications, works with manufacturers on the purchase of equipment statewide and oversees emergency radio rental during disaster situations. Ensuring clear radio communications during disasters is just one step of the emergency planning process for electric cooperatives. Other steps include:- Identifying individuals responsible for developing and carrying out the cooperatives' emergency preparedness program;
- Training personnel in responding to petroleum/hazardous material spills, electrical accidents and in-house emergencies;
- Developing steps for dealing with natural disasters such as wind, floods, snow, sleet or ice; and
- Providing key information in crisis situations.
