Television ad tells importance of wind energy, efficiency, coal

Corn Belt Power and CIPCO co-ops place campaign together

With the goal of communicating a three-part plan to respond to the growing demand for electricity, Corn Belt Power Cooperative and Central Iowa Power Cooperative (CIPCO) cooperatives are placing television advertising beginning Jan. 7.

A new television spot opens with the image of a young girl learning to ride a bicycle as the announcer states, "Progress means facing challenges head on."

The announcer then explains that the member cooperatives of Central Iowa Power and Corn Belt Power know the importance of renewable energy while the video includes shots of the Hancock County Wind Energy Center.

The script continues, stating highly efficient coal generation is also necessary to meet the growing demand for energy as an image of the Walter Scott Energy Center Unit 4 is shown.

The ad message also states the importance of energy efficiency for our children¹s future and the spot concludes with images of a young family using compact fluorescent light bulbs and energy-efficient appliances.

Rand Fisher, president, Iowa Area Development Group, a familiar voice in the promotion of Iowa¹s electric cooperatives, serves as narrator for the advertising spot. The scene with the family was filmed at the home of Mike and Lynette Clark, members of Midland Power Cooperative.

"During a time when political candidates are making statements about our energy future and when legislators are beginning to craft new laws that will affect our power supplies in Iowa, it¹s important to communicate cooperatives' plan to deal with the growing demand for electricity," explains Kathy Taylor, vice president, corporate relations.

"A television campaign will help us communicate to members and the general public that a combination of additional wind generation, energy efficiency measures and baseload power from highly efficient coal plants will help us continue to serve our member cooperatives reliably and affordably," Taylor explains.
