Des Moines, Iowa, March 6, 2007 - After the state received two major winter storms in less than one week, the Iowa Association of Electric Cooperatives is pleased to report power has been restored to all member-consumers. The majority of member-consumers had their power restored last week and throughout the weekend, with several hundred coming back online on Monday and Tuesday.
During the storms, Iowa's electric cooperatives had approximately 97,028 outages throughout the entire state, 48 substations were out and more than 5,500 distribution and transmission poles were down. In order to restore power as quickly as possible, line crews from Illinois, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska and Wisconsin were brought in to assist many of the cooperatives with the restoration efforts. Overall, the crews worked 11 days to restore power and as many as 850 line personnel were involved with the efforts.
The Iowa Association of Electric Cooperatives commends the line crews and staff for working day and night to bring power back to Iowa's cooperative member-consumers. The crews often worked in difficult weather conditions, but everyone pulled together as a team and we are proud of what they accomplished.
The Iowa Association of Electric Cooperatives also thanks all of the cooperatives' member-consumers for their patience and communication during the outages, while crews worked to restore power in a timely and safe manner.
The Iowa Association of Electric Cooperatives, formed in 1942, is the Des Moines-based statewide association representing 37 distribution cooperatives in Iowa and six generation and transmission cooperatives serving more than 210,000 rural homes, farms and industries in all 99 counties. The IAEC provides legislative, regulatory, safety, communications and education and training programs and services to its members. The IAEC is also a Touchstone Energy partner - a national alliance of local, consumer-owned electric cooperatives. More than 600 Touchstone Energy cooperatives in 45 states are delivering energy and energy solutions to more than 22 million customers every day.
