Company plans to turn livestock manure into natural gas
A Minnesota company planning to turn livestock manure into natural gas pure enough to heat homes is getting $200,000 in state loans to build a plant in northwest Iowa. Current plans call for the plant to be built in North West REC's service territory. Bison Renewable Energy says it will build a $25 million plant near Hull in Sioux County, creating 74 jobs. It will use technology developed in Europe, which uses bacteria to break down the manure into commercially usable gas.
The company expects to use the waste from about 1.6 million hogs per year and will produce just over five billion cubic feet of natural gas in its second year. That's enough gas to heat about 70,000 homes for an entire heating season. The company has a contract to sell its gas to Northern Natural Gas Company in Omaha, Nebraska.
