WinterStorm Leaves Thousands Without Power in Missouri - Iowa's Electric Cooperatives Provide Restoration Assistance
Des Moines, Iowa, Jan. 24, 2007 - Crews from nine of Iowa's electric cooperatives headed to Missouri on Wednesday to assist with Missouri's ongoing power restoration efforts. About 16,000 cooperative members remain without power after another winter storm dumped more snow and ice on parts of Missouri over the weekend.
Linemen from just about every unaffected system in Missouri, plus crews from Iowa, Illinois, Arkansas, Kansas, Kentucky and Mississippi have joined in the all-out effort to restore power. More than 1,500 linemen are working the storm, which is being called the worst in anyone's memory. Ice load as much as three inches thick caused chain reactions, downing rows of poles like dominoes. Thousands of poles, many of them just installed, were broken by the ice.
The Iowa crews, including 20 linemen and 10 trucks - are assisting Ozark Electric Cooperative in Mt. Vernon, Missouri. Iowa cooperatives currently participating in the restoration efforts include Access Energy Cooperative, Mt. Pleasant; Consumers Energy, Marshalltown; Eastern Iowa Light and Power, Wilton; Guthrie County REC, Guthrie Center; Harrison County REC, Woodbine; Pella Cooperative Electric, Pella; Southwest Iowa REC, Corning/Stanton/Mount Ayr; T.I.P. REC, Brooklyn; and Western Iowa Power Cooperative, Denison.
Following earlier winter storms this year, Iowa's electric cooperatives have also sent crews to Nebraska and Illinois to assist with power restoration efforts. Iowa has provided nearly 80 linemen and 37 trucks to the three states needing assistance.
The Iowa Association of Electric Cooperatives, formed in 1942, is the Des Moines-based statewide association representing 37 distribution cooperatives in Iowa and six generation and transmission cooperatives serving more than 210,000 rural homes, farms and industries in all 99 counties. The IAEC provides legislative, regulatory, safety, communications and education and training programs and services to its members.
The IAEC is also a Touchstone Energy partner - a national alliance of local, consumer-owned electric cooperatives. More than 600 Touchstone Energy cooperatives in 45 states are delivering energy and energy solutions to more than 22 million customers every day.
