An Iowa electric cooperative promotes renewable energy by harnessing the wind and sunlight for their own power needs. Consumers Energy Cooperative in Marshalltown, Iowa, promotes the 25 by 25 Initiative goal of providing 25 percent of the nation's energy by the year 2025.
Consumers Energy powers their own headquarters with renewable sources, according to Brian Heithoff, the cooperative's general manager and CEO.
"All of our vehicles run either on an ethanol or biodiesel blend," Heithoff told Brownfield Thursday from the annual meeting of the Iowa Association of Electric Cooperatives in Des Moines. "We generate a majority of the power for own headquarters facilities from renewable resources; most of that's from the wind, but some of it's also solar.
The cooperative maintains two wind turbines in addition to Iowa's largest photo-voltaic array adjacent to their facilities to supply their own power, and when there's a surplus, to feed power unto the grid from which other customers are supplied.
"So we're taking a number of steps to try to live out the vision ourselves."
