Iowa's Electric Cooperatives: Investing in Renewable Resources

Renewable resources are an important part of Iowa's overall energy mix. That's why Iowa's electric cooperatives are actively integrating renewable energy into our systems. In doing so, we strive to balance safety, reliability and affordability with our commitment to being environmentally responsible energy providers.

All of Iowa's electric cooperatives have a fair and workable interconnection policy in place for renewable systems. In 2005 alone, Iowa's electric
cooperatives interconnected 7 new consumer-owned wind and photovoltaic generation units.

In total, Iowa's electric co-ops have interconnected at least 32 consumer-owned wind, photovoltaic and methane units.

During the past year, the co-ops purchased 452,000 kWhs from these generating units more than double of just one year ago.

Member-consumers of Iowa's electric cooperatives contributed $42,726 to their green pricing programs in 2005, which translates into the equivalent of 2 million kWhs. In addition:
  • Iowa's electric cooperatives receive power from 10 separate wind farms.
  • Electric cooperatives consumers installed 711 ground source geothermal systems in 2005.
  • Iowa's electric cooperatives are providing power to nearly two-thirds of the states ethanol and soy biodiesel plants.

As a whole, cooperatives are also using renewable resources such as wind, methane digesters, landfill gas, hydro, soy biodiesel and photovoltaics, as part of their overall generation mix.
