Nov. 18, 2005 - "Energy in Focus," headlines this year's annual meeting of the Iowa Association of Electric Cooperatives, Dec. 1-2. More than 500 electric co-op representatives will convene in Des Moines to get the latest information on the industry trends, renewable energy, economic indicators and politics. Now that Congress has passed a national energy bill, what can consumers expect? Glenn English, CEO of the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association (NRECA) based in Washington, D.C., will be on hand to open the meeting and share the latest information on this landmark legislation and other timely topics such as renewable energy and transmission. Attendees include locally elected directors, managers and key staff from 45 cooperative electric utilities serving more than 203,000 businesses and residences in all of Iowa's 99 counties.

  • Energy - Prices, Solutions Heat Up: With winter fuel heating costs predicted to be 50 percent higher this year, John Norris, the new chair of the Iowa Utilities Board, will share his insight on the challenges and potential solutions.
  • National Energy Bill - A Decade in the Making: The Energy Policy Act of 2005 was the result of nearly a decade of strategic and political maneuvering. Stephan Petry, NRECA�s senior director of legislative affairs, was on the front lines of the battle to pass legislation that worked for cooperatives. Learn of the unprecedented challenges and victories this landmark legislation presented electric cooperatives and the road ahead now that Congress has passed this bill.
  • Political Forecast - What's Ahead in 2008? Ronald Brownstein, national political correspondent for the "Los Angeles Times," will share his insight and predictions for the 2008 political landscape.
  • Venture Awards Presentation: The Iowa Area Development Group will honor 12 Iowa companies for their significant contributions in diversifying and developing Iowa�s economy.
  • Rising Energy Costs - Tips for Consumers: Directors and key staff from all of Iowa's electric cooperatives will attend meeting and can discuss the programs and services cooperatives offer member-consumers to help combat rising energy costs.
