Construction begins on peaking station serving Iowa consumers
Construction is underway for a $69-million natural gas-fired power plant that will join Basin Electric's generating resources in 2006.
The peaking facility and will have a generating capacity of 95 megawatts, and will connect into an existing substation operated by the Western Area Power Administration. Also nearby is another Basin Electric substation.
The project, called the Groton Generation Station, consists of three parts: the generating station,
transmission to interconnect with the Western substation, and installation of about 12 miles of natural gas pipeline to interconnect into the Northern Border Pipeline, which will supply fuel for the unit.
The generator will be driven by a General Electric LMS100 simple-cycle gas turbine, GE's first commercial application of the model. Completion and operation of the Groton Generation Station are scheduled for the summer of 2006.
Basin Electric is a consumer-owned, regional cooperative headquartered in Bismarck. It generates and transmits electricity to 121 member rural electric systems in nine states: Colorado, Iowa, Minnesota, Montana, Nebraska, New Mexico, North Dakota, South Dakota and Wyoming. These member systems distribute electricity to about 1.8 million consumers.
