Grundy County Rural Electric Cooperative is seeking an experienced and well-qualified leader for the position of General Manager. Due to the anticipated retirement of the cooperative’s manager early in 2021, the Grundy County REC Board is seeking to hire a new General Manager. The Board would like to have the new General Manager begin no later than January 4th, 2021; but the start date is somewhat flexible.  

Grundy County Rural Electric Cooperative is a member-owned electric cooperative that provides reliable electric services to about 2,300 points of service at homes, businesses and organizations spread across approximately 900 miles of power lines, primarily in Grundy, Tama, Butler, Marshall, Hardin and Black Hawk Counties in the central part of Iowa.  The Cooperative has 12 employees with a 7- member board of directors that is elected by the member-consumers. The Cooperative’s purpose is to provide dependable, affordable electric service to the rural families, farms and industries in its service area. It's headquartered in Grundy Center, Iowa, the county seat community in a county with over 12,500 residents.

Definition:
The General Manager will work in all aspects and elements of the company.   He/She will have knowledge of all company functions, company policies, and the general business of operating the company, including its administrative headquarters, co-op personnel, and other entities that may be a part of, or associated with the company.  The General Manager must possess a complete understanding of the electric cooperative business model and principles and keep the members’ interests as their first priority.

Relationships:
The General Manager reports directly to the Grundy REC Board of Directors, consisting of seven directors representing the membership, for strategic direction and for evaluation. 

Directs:
This position supervises the Office Manager, Operations Manager and the Member Service Manager

Essential Job Functions:
Be responsible for the operation of the Cooperative and the supervision and administration of its employees.

Select, train and determine duties, responsibilities and compensation levels for employees. Conduct annual performance reviews for direct reports.

Delegate authority to supervisory employees sufficient for them to effectively direct, supervise and be responsible for work performed by employees assigned to them. Annual performance reviews will be expected for all employees.

Keep the Board informed about the Cooperative’s operations and financial condition through regular monthly operations and financial reports, and such other reports as the Board may request.

Work with the Board in developing and implementing the Cooperative’s short term and long-term goals and objectives.  Utilize successful strategic planning to ensure the Cooperatives long-term success.

Prepare budgets, work plans and recommendations for consideration by the Board, and implement and administer them following Board approval and authorization.

Hold a solid understanding of the company’s rate structure and evaluate any changes needed based on business practices and cooperative principles.

Understand and effectively communicate to employees, board, and membership current legislative issues and potential impact those issues may have.

Be responsible for establishing and maintaining effective member relations and communications, including education on such topics as safety and the efficient use of electric energy.

Attend industry and other meetings, conferences and educational programs that are beneficial to the Cooperative and its business and operations.

Positively and professionally project a professional image of the Cooperative in business and the public environment as well as with company employees in everyday work environments.

Be actively involved and keep up to date with all personnel policies, insurances, attend to legal matters, liability issues, safety issues and contractual business obligations.

Must strive to always be strategic in thinking. Must be diligent in attempting to forecast how the business environment and business developments could positively or negatively affect the coop. The General Manager should call them to the attention of the Board of Directors and appropriate managers within the coop and take appropriate company direction.

Perform such other tasks as the Board may from time to time assign or direct.

 

Requirements

Earned Associates or Bachelor’s Degree, preferably with a Business or Management background.

Display ability to effectively communicate, manage time, and express good managerial and business skills.

Maintain valid driver’s license and travel as needed to represent the company. Overnight travel is required.

Effectively complete necessary job tasks without daily supervision.

Demonstrate a full understanding of all company computer software and related technology hardware. Must have experience using Microsoft Office programs and capability to learn new software programs related to the industry. Have the ability and interest to implement technology that benefits the cooperative.

Have the ability to manage through, maintain control, and demonstrate leadership in the event of a crisis.

Maintain all professional qualifications, certifications, and licenses required to perform assigned tasks and responsibilities.

Participate in professional improvement meetings, functions, groups, and activities that may directly or indirectly improve the General Manager’s skills and talents in managing and directing the coop and its business.

With a full benefit package, annual compensation will be commensurate with experience and qualifications. The successful candidate will be required to live within a reasonable distance of the Cooperative's office in Grundy Center, Iowa.
