POSITION SUMMARY
Supports mapping and data management efforts and assists with maintaining and improving the cooperative’s geographic information system (GIS), supporting field data collection, and ensuring the accuracy of mapping data used to operate and maintain the electric distribution system. This role provides hands-on experience in GIS applications within a utility setting.

 

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Observes and practices all safety policies and bulletins.
  • Assists with editing, analyzing, updating, and maintaining GIS data, maps, and databases.
  • Maintains and operates GIS hardware and software with corresponding GIS users as well as all GPS devices and users.
  • Performs quality control and quality assurance on GIS data and attributes.
  • Prepares maps, reports, and supporting documentation.
  • Collects and verifies field data using GPS equipment and mobile GIS applications.
  • Digitizes features from aerial imagery, plans, and existing records.
  • Supports data entry and organization within GIS and related systems.
  • Documents changes to GIS datasets.
  • Implements automated workflows using geoprocessing tools and scripting tools based on cooperative needs.
  • Occasionally conducts field investigations to verify and update mapping data as directed by supervisor.
  • Collaborate with staff to ensure accurate representation of electric system assets.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license.

Operations Manager

 

Consumers Energy, a member-owned electric cooperative headquartered in Marshalltown, Iowa, with an outpost in Nevada, Iowa, has a position open for a GIS Intern.

Duties include those related to supporting mapping and data management efforts and assisting with maintaining and improving the cooperative’s geographic information system (GIS), supporting field data collection, and ensuring the accuracy of mapping data used to operate and maintain the electric distribution system. This role provides hands-on experience in GIS applications within a utility setting. The position reports to the Operations Manager. 

The successful candidate is highly safety-oriented, member-service driven, organized, a strong problem solver, and enjoys working in a team environment.  

Education required: Must have a high school diploma or GED, plus completion of at least one year of college coursework in GIS, geography, engineering, planning, or a related field preferred. An exceptional favorable work or employment experience may be considered for the education requirements. Must have a valid driver's license.

Experience required: Prior GIS or mapping experience in the electric utility industry is helpful but not required. Experience with ESRI products (e.g., ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Online, Field Maps) is a plus. An exceptional work or educational background may be considered for a portion of the experience requirements.

ABOUT CONSUMERS ENERGY
Consumers Energy is an electric cooperative owned by the members we serve. Headquartered in Marshalltown, Iowa, with an outpost in Nevada, Iowa, the cooperative provides reliable, safe, and affordable electric service to approximately 7,000 members throughout five counties in Central Iowa: Marshall, Story, Polk, Jasper, and Tama.

 

Requirements

Education:

  • Completion of at least one year of college coursework in GIS, geography, engineering, planning, or a related field preferred.
  • Satisfactory completion of at least one GIS course preferred.

Experience:

  • Prior GIS or mapping experience in the electric utility industry is helpful but not required.
  • Experience with ESRI products (e.g., ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Online, Field Maps) is a plus.
  • An exceptional work or educational background may be considered for a portion of the experience requirements.

Alcohol and Drug Testing:

  • This is a safety sensitive position, and as a condition of employment this position is subject to random alcohol and drug testing.

Knowledge:

  • Basic understanding of GIS principles and mapping concepts.
  • Familiarity with ESRI or similar GIS software is preferred.

Abilities and Skills:

  • Must be able to command the respect of fellow employees.
  • Must have the ability to meet the public well and to answer routine questions.
  • Must be able to work eight-hours-a-day, five-days-a-week.
  • Must be able to work outside of the regular hours due to storm damage to the cooperative’s system.
  • Must be able to use GPS equipment, mobile data collection tools, tablets, etc. (or have a willingness to learn).
  • Must have basic proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, etc.).
  • Must have strong organizational and time management skills.
  • Must be able to manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines.
  • Must have effective written and verbal communication skills.


Environmental Conditions:

  • All work will be performed indoors and outdoors on the cooperative’s system in all weather conditions.

Physical:

  • Must possess visual acuity and good listening skills.
  • Must have the ability to communicate verbally with employees, members, customers, and vendors.
  • Must be able to sit for extended periods of time.
  • Requires repetitive motions with hands and fingers such as keyboarding.
  • Must be able to stand, walk, bend, stoop, squat, and lift approximately 50 pounds.
