Maquoketa Valley Electric Cooperative (MVEC) currently has an opening for a Power System Distribution Engineer at its headquarters in Anamosa, IA, which is located about 15 miles East of Cedar Rapids.
MVEC is a fast-paced utility that relies heavily on technology to make smart decisions to increase electric reliability for our member-owners. Maquoketa Valley has been recognized nationally as a visionary of Smart Grid technologies and has presented at several national conferences, as well as featured in numerous industry magazines. MVEC is not your traditional electric utility.
Being a mid-sized utility, our engineering staff is involved with a variety of tasks and decisions. This position will help develop the next generation electric system and requires an individual who is curious, innovative, self-driven, and highly motivated. No two days will be the same at MVEC.
You will be tasked with overseeing and finding new, innovative ways to expand smart grid technologies between the substation and meter, and challenged to use the Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI), Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA), Outage Management System, (OMS), and Geographical Information System (GIS) data in a manner that will allow MVEC to continue to provide it’s member-owners with affordable reliable service.
Some of the responsibilities you will have at the cooperative:
- Create a multi-million dollar project list that drives the capital budget of the co-op.
- Develop and implement all engineering studies, including construction work plans, long range plans, reliability plans, etc.
- Complete field reviews of projects in progress to verify design and construction standards are followed.
- Complete system studies required to evaluate interconnection requests for distributed generation (DG) to the system.
- Design and implement new programs to help increase the reliability of the electric system.
- Work closely with the line design team to develop new best practices to simplify the process of designing of new power lines.
- Ensure that all system construction is done in accordance with RUS and NESC standards
- Design all residential and commercial developments.
- Assist the IT department with the installation, development, and maintenance of software systems that are used by engineering and operations.
- Provide technical expertise to other employees and members of MVEC.
- Work continually towards self-development to maintain professional and technical knowledge.

Requirements
BS in Electrical Engineering or a related field is required.
Some experience in electric utility engineering is preferred; however mentorship will be given to help personal and career development.
