Midland Power Cooperative is currently seeking a self-motivated individual to join its team full-time as a SAFETY COORDINATOR in Midland Power’s JEFFERSON, IA office. This position will transition to a future location in Boone, IA in 2020.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Responsible for knowing and complying with Midland Power’s safety rules, procedures, and safety policies to include: NESC, OSHA, Federal, and State DOT, NEC, and IAEC and any pertinent rules and standards that may apply to employees, members, and community in general.
  • Investigating all accidents, which may include vehicle accidents, workers compensation claims, employee accidents, electrical contacts, and any other accidents which may be a “near-miss” incident or that requires further investigation.
  • Staying informed of DNR, EPA and other hazardous waste management rules and laws.
  • Supervising CDL licensing, including random drug testing and providing periodic daily/monthly reports to assure compliance with both the state and federal Department of Transportation.
  • Preparing and coordinating the Rural Electric Safety Achievement Program (RESAP).
  • Assists with the Apprenticeship program and helps facilitate safety committee meetings and safety programs for all employees.
  • Performs and records safety inspections of facilities and on-site crews on a regular basis.
  • Provides needed assistance in emergency situations.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Skills & Abilities:
Must demonstrate good communication skills with coworkers, supervisor(s), members, vendors, and other parties. Be willing to learn about the Cooperative’s services and programs, processes, and procedures. Possess the ability to handle a variety of diverse tasks including multiple projects and be able to meet deadlines. Must have experience using Microsoft Office programs and the ability to learn new software programs related to the industry and duties as assigned.

Education & Experience:

  • A high school diploma or higher education is required.
  • Prior electrical experience is preferred.
  • Successful completion of the NRECA Loss Control Internship Program within three years will be required. There will be a program of continuing education in related safety programs and procedures.

Licenses & Certifications:
A valid Driver's License is required. A valid Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) license is preferred.

Working Conditions:
The work is primarily office work in an indoor, climate-controlled environment. However, outside work may be necessary at times. Occasional travel for trainings and meetings is necessary. Overnight stays for trainings may be required occasionally. Must be willing to work overtime as needed.

Physical Requirements:
Must have the ability to use hands, stand for periods of time, walk, sit, bend, stoop, squat, lift and carry between 50-75 pounds, twist, balance, kneel, and crouch. Must have the ability to sit in a vehicle to drive and/or ride to various construction, service, or right-of-way sites. Must have the ability to detect and communicate hazardous situations, either while presenting safety programs, performing safety inspections, and/or conducting accident investigations.
