Frequent travel for converter station activities. Will require occasional nights and weekends with ability to respond quickly for an emergency even in inclement weather.

Summary:
Manage the overall installation, construction, operation, and maintenance of the High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) system and all associated equipment at the converter stations. Provide leadership and supervision of the on-site staff at the Coal Creek (Underwood, ND) and Dickinson (Buffalo, MN) HVDC converter stations and coordinate activities with various internal departments and external entities. 


Total Rewards:
A typical starting range for this position is $135,000 - $193,000 annually. Responsibilities:
Job responsibilities include, but are not limited to

  • Lead and manage HVDC converter stations to achieve optimal performance for Nexus Line, LLC, Great River Energy (GRE), and its member systems. 
  • Lead and collaborate with others on the scheduling of maintenance activities and construction or replacement projects
  • Participate with transmission engineering in negotiations and meetings with HVDC vendors on upgrade projects
  • Negotiate with vendors and contractors as it relates to warranty issues, spare parts, maintenance repairs, and securing new products and services
  • Assure that building and associated station equipment is being properly maintained 
  • Ensure that GRE manager and Nexus Line representative are fully informed on issues affecting system integrity and the department
  • Provide technical support and coordination with technicians, system engineers and system operations. 
  • Support technicians and engineers in analyzing and troubleshooting system problems to achieve high system reliability
  • Lead in the scheduling of outages with system operations and assist in the preparation of outage and operational performance reports
  • Coordinate changes in the converter station operation and implement software changes to the control systems
  • Manage and proactively lead the scheduling, testing, and documenting of construction and maintenance for the HVDC converter stations 
  • Assure that NERC testing and compliance standards are met for the medium impact stations
  • Assure environmental compliance is being met with our permits and disposal of hazardous waste
  • Ensure that standard operating procedures, “as built prints” and documentation are up to date
  • Lead, manage, coach and provide work direction to employees so they utilize safe work practices every day, maximize productivity and have a teamwork environment. 
  • Develop department goals and individual performance goals 
  • Provide regular feedback and evaluate performance of direct report technicians via corporate performance management process and other tools

Requirements

Applicants must be authorized to work in the U.S. without restriction. Visa sponsorship is not available.


Qualifications:

Knowledge typically acquired through a two- year technical degree in electrical/electronics or bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering or related field. Must possess excellent customer service, leadership, and technical skills with a minimum of six years in the electric utility industry. HVDC technology, leadership, and project work direction experience is preferred. 


Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities 

  • Engineering design documentation and ability to interpret technical drawings, materials, contracts, and other related documentation 
  • Construction and maintenance practices of power and distribution systems and familiarity with safety codes and standards 
  • Understanding of networks and computer control systems 
  • Communicating effectively at both technical and executive levels. Skills must include good interpersonal skills as well as written and verbal communication skills and ability to understand information and ideas as presented
