Discover D.C. with Iowa Youth Tour

An unforgettable leadership experience for high school students

Since 1958, Iowa’s electric cooperatives have proudly sponsored high school students on a weeklong journey to Washington, D.C. as part of the National Rural Electric Cooperative Youth Tour. Each June, selected students explore the nation’s capital, connect with peers from across the country, and gain a deeper understanding of American history, government, and the cooperative business model.

What to Expect

  • Learn by doing: Dive into the world of electric cooperatives, U.S. government, and civic engagement.

  • Meet your leaders: Visit Capitol Hill and speak directly with your elected officials.

  • Celebrate National Youth Day: Join over 1,800 students from across the country for a day of inspiration and unity.

  • Explore D.C.: Tour iconic landmarks, museums, and memorials that bring history to life.

High school students in Iowa with a passion for government, leadership, and public service are encouraged to apply. Each year, approximately 40 students are selected by their local electric cooperatives. Selection criteria vary by co-op, so be sure to check with yours for specific details.
